Get Hired as an Engineering Intern with the Right Company

It’s no big secret that securing an internship is a significant pathway to job success after graduation. An estimated 300,000 students hold an internship in the US annually. As further proof that internships are the route to choose, College Recruiter guesses that students without internship experience got 16% fewer job offers.  

Engineering students might find a summer internship a valuable way to gain insight into employment after college. But how do students find an excellent engineering internship with the right company? 

1. Don’t be afraid to try something unfamiliar. Many engineering students know about jobs in manufacturing plants, learning about processes and production. They know about jobs with software companies, industrial facilities, research and development, and even product testing.  However, many engineering students are unaware of the multiple opportunities available in sales. Why would an engineer work in sales? There are many reasons, including potentially high compensation, the challenge of understanding technical products, finding innovative solutions for demanding problems, and working one-on-one with customers. 2. Look at the culture of the company. After you’ve looked at the open internship positions available on Indeed or in your college’s career center, it’s time to do some company research. What do others say about the company you are researching? What are they publishing on social media? What are other career opportunities available there? Do you know anyone who currently works at the company? What do they have to say about the culture, the benefits, and the other people working there? If you plan to spend valuable time working as an intern, it’s essential to understand more about the company courting you.
   
   
3. Write a stand-out resume and cover letter. Hiring managers are often flooded with resumes, especially in the winter when students try to get summer plans in order. Craft a professional resume to illustrate your experience, skills, and relevant coursework. Some general skills necessary for engineering internships include communication, leadership, and problem-solving. Add a proofed, edited cover letter that tells the hiring manager why you’re the perfect fit for a summer internship.
